Cybele's Secret
&
Wildwood Dancing
Did you hear? I know there's this little bird...he gets around....or maybe you haven't heard?
Well, in any case, let me be the first to tell you: I just fell in love. It's true!
I fell in love with Juliet Marillier & her books....specifically Wildwood Dancing
and Cybele's Secret
. I discovered them whilst perusing blogs...and I found this one blog of especially note (for it's prettiness & creativity!)....Fairytales, French Fries and Baby Kisses by name....kept by two sisters, I believe. Lovely blog. :)
And.....and.... way down hidden amongst older posts, I found this post which was more than enough to pique me curiosity. So, I looked them up at my library, found out that we have almost all her books (yay!) and checked out the two books above to start with.
What did I find?
I rediscovered two things through this book........ my love of fairytales (I love love love them!)
and ......my love of Romania. That's right! These are Romanian fairytale stories!
Needless to say, there's not much else to say......I've read each book twice already since Wednesday, and I've got the others on hold at the library......
Thank you, Bethany & Esther. :)
I wonder how many people saw the title of this post and did a double take
ReplyDeleteWhat are Romanian fairytales like? Do they have similar characters to the more common (in the West) fairytales? Hopefully they're not like some of the Brothers Grimm's grimmer ones :-P
Probably....quite a few did! haha
ReplyDeleteRomanian fairytales are actually very much like the Grimm fairytales (which I loved as a kid and love even now!) Not many people enjoy those tales --they are kind of ODD, I admit---but I do. :) Also, the Red, Blue, Green, Brown, etc...Fairy Books were a favorite of mine as well. Our library has them all! :]
Just fun stuff. If you want a taste of Romanian fairytales, try reading some of these: http://www.tititudorancea.com/z/romanian_fairy_tales.htm
Oh my goodness! Two of my very favorite books! A good friend of mine MADE me read Wildwood Dancing and I've been hooked ever since :) Love love love them!
ReplyDelete(I was dubiously tricked!)
ReplyDeleteAlso, those Romanian fairytales are pretty good. Read a bit just now.
Thanks for the link! I like the first two :-)
ReplyDeleteI do like Grimm's Fairytales for the most part, but there are some that make me question their status as children's stories! Burning a witch alive in her oven? Really? :O
